THE PROSTHETIC IS A REGISTER OF AGENCY GIVEN TO THE ANIMAL THAT INSTALLS THE ABNATURAL¹. BY OFFSETTING THE DEFICIENCIES OF THE ANIMAL THROUGH THE ROBOTIC, THE PROSTHETIC WITHIN HUMANS IS ONLY UNDERSTOOD BY UNDERMINING THE LOGIC OF ROBOTIC. TO DESIGN “LIKE A ROBOT,” IS TO DESIGN FOR A CONTEMPORARY AESTHETIC OF THE PROSTHETIC.

OUR PROPOSAL CONSIDERS THE ABNATURAL AS AN INTERMEDIARY LENS FOR ARTICULATING DIMENSIONS IN-BETWEEN ROBOTIC, ANIMAL, AND PLANT. THEREIN, NO METRIC OF VALUE THAT EXISTS, RATHER A SUMMATION THAT FUNDAMENTALLY EXPOSES THE ITEM WITHIN MULTIPLICITY. THROUGH AN AESTHETIC ESTRANGEMENT, THE INCOMPLETENESS OF THE UNCANNY IS REPLACED FOR THE ABNATURAL DATABASE.

THE WORKS ARE “PINPOINTED” ALONG A GRAPH AS A VENTURE IN THE PRODUCTION OF OUTLINING WHAT DEFINES THE TERMS AND AESTHETICS OF ABNATURAL ITERATIONS. THIS INTRODUCES A QUESTION OF “ASYMPTOTIC REALISM²”, A CONSTRUCT THAT PERTAINS TO THE DISGUIDING OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS THAT PREVENT A PURE CROSSOVER BETWEEN SYSTEMS: ROBOT, ANIMAL, AND PLANT. A REALISM THAT VENTURES TOWARD A UTOPIAN THRESHOLD BUT CAN NEVER BE ACTUALIZED AS ASYMPTOTIC.

WE APPROPRIATE ARCHITECTURAL CONVENTIONS TO INFORM DIFFERENT FORMAL ELEMENTS WITHIN AN ARCHITECTURAL PACE WHILE ALSO BEING FORMATTED WITHIN A COHESIVE PROSTHETIC STRUCTURE. THE RIPPLING OF THIS DESIGN QUESTIONS ROLES OF SPORT, ACADEMIA, MEDICINE, ETC. IF THESE ARE ROBOTS, DO THEY GO TO THE DOCTOR OR THE MECHANIC WHEN BROKEN?  THEN WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TECH SUPPORT AND A SURGEON?

¹ A STATE OF BEING, THE UNCANNY SYNTHESIS OF NATURAL AND MACHINE WHICH OBSCURES THE NATURAL ORDER OF RATIONALISM FOR ABSTRACTION IN THE VISUAL WORLD.

² AN EQUATION THAT EQUALS THE POINT OF IMPOSSIBILITY ON BOTH MAXIMA OF THE RANGE OF REALISM WHERE THE WORK IS INACCESSIBLE AS PURELY X OR Y, THROUGH ANY INSTRUMENT OF MEDIATION BETWEEN THE CONSCIOUS, SUBCONSCIOUS, AND THE “BODY.”
